Security Council to discuss human rights abuse in Burma

The United Nations Security Council has formally put Burma on its agenda and will now discuss political repression and human rights abuses in the country.

United States ambassador to the UN John Bolton describes the move as very significant and says it has come despite strong opposition from China.

Mr Bolton says the US considers the regime in Burma a threat to international peace and security,

"This is a major step forward for President Bush's effort to bring to the attention of the international community the situation inside Burma and its effects in its region and around the world," he said.

"What we see as a threat to international peace and security because of the... refugees, illicit narcotics, HIV/AIDS and the human rights situation inside Burma."

Ten council members, including the US, Britain and France, voted for the motion to put military-ruled Burma on the agenda.

China, Russia, Qatar and Congo voted against, with Tanzania abstaining.
